Is it a Western Canadian thing to dislike Toronto? As a frequent visitor over the years, I think we must all take a sober second look and realize what we have here and why not consider it as a honeymoon destination. Toronto is a bustling, sophisticated, cosmopolitan city, yet that at the same time, feels so very comfortable and friendly. How Canadian is that?
We checked into the stunning St. Regis Hotel located downtown in the financial district within easy walking distance to restaurants, shopping and theatre. We secretly screamed with delight when we were upgraded to a two bedroom corner suite. It was beautifully appointed with a huge soaker tub and fireplace. As the weather was chilly and fall like, these amenities were definitely appreciated. There is a most amazing bar/restaurant on the top floor but more about that later.
There are so many options to entertain you in this city. There are museums and galleries, quaint antique shops, restaurants, not to mention shopping; Queen W , Yonge, Bloor Streets, the Distillery District; I could go on but these are a few of my favourites. Professional sports play a large part of life here as well so why not indulge in a basketball or baseball game! I love live theatre and Toronto does not disappoint. There are a number of venues offering world class theatre and I have enjoyed many a show here.
Dining and cocktailing around Toronto is unlimited however a highlight for us was LOUIX LOUIS high atop the St. Regis. Inspired by the iconic cocktail parlours of New York and Paris, the two storey high Grand Bar is the place to enjoy forgotten classics. Influenced by Toronto’s heritage as one of the largest distillery districts in the work during the turn of the century, the bar houses over 500 dark spirits, one of the largest collections in North America. Be sure to look up and marvel at the 60 foot ceiling mural, ‘Bouquet of Whisky’, inspired by a glass of Canadian whisky by artist Madison van Rijn. With an extensive bar menu, it is difficult to only have one. I particularly enjoyed the Blood and Sand and if you sit at the bar, ask for Lia who created the Gin Ribbon. She will share a wealth of cocktail history and, should you wish, create a bespoke one for you as well!
We also included both Marbl on King Street W for their Foie Gras “PB & J”, Veal Chop “parm” and the Rigatoni. If you’re in the mood for eastern Mediterranean cuisine, Byblos has a lamb dish to die for. Other notable tables include Spaccio and Gusto 501 if you run to Italian!
Toronto the bad? I don’t think so; if you are looking for a big city honeymoon, this city does not disappoint!
